Kahului, HI – The Friends of Kauanoe Batangan will host a dinner fundraiser for the Kahului native on Wednesday, June 27, at the Velma McWayne Santos Community Center. Batangan, a former congressional aide, is seeking the Democratic nomination for the Hawaiʻi House of Representatives, District 9.
The fundraiser is scheduled from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. A $25 donation is suggested.
Batangan first gained government experience serving as an aid to the late Senator Daniel Akaka and later to Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard. After graduating from Kamehameha Schools Maui, he went on to study Political Science at Stanford University before earning Master’s degrees from Columbia University’s School of International and Public Affairs and the University of Tokyo’s Graduate School of Public Policy. While pursuing his Master’s degrees, he founded the Native Hawaiian Congressional Fellowship, a program that gives young Native Hawaiian leaders the opportunity to work closely with congressional leaders in Washington, D.C. Batangan most recently worked as a long-term substitute teacher at his alma mater, Kamehameha Schools Maui.
The Democratic primary election will be held on August 11, 2018. House District 9 includes Kahului, Puʻunēnē, Old Sand Hills, and Maui Lani.
